Nella mia tesi, ho trattato la raccolta “Responsibilities”, del poeta irlandese W. B. Yeats. La raccolta, pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1914 e caratterizzata da uno stile sobrio e diretto e da una forte enfasi sulla realtà, è composta da trentadue poesie. Di queste trentadue, io ne ho analizzate sedici, con una particolare attenzione alle controversie sociali e politiche che hanno infiammato Dublino fra il 1890 e il 1913 e catturato l’attenzione del poeta, al rapporto conflittuale di Yeats con la borghesia cattolica irlandese, di cui critica aspramente l’attaccamento al denaro e il disinteresse nei confronti della cultura, e alle figure dell’amata Maud Gonne e della cara amica e mentore Lady Augusta Gregory. Il titolo della raccolta fa riferimento alle responsabilità dell’individuo, e in particolare dell’artista, verso la propria famiglia, società, patria, arte, e verso la vita stessa: responsabilità personali, sociali, civiche, nazionali ed estetiche.
In my dissertation, I addressed the collection "Responsibilities", by the Irish poet W. B. Yeats. The collection, first published in 1914 and characterised by a spare, direct language and a strong emphasis on reality, is made of thirty-two poems. I selected and analysed sixteen of them, with a special attention to the social and political controversies that inflamed Dublin and captured the poet's attention between 1890 and 1913, to Yeats's harsh criticism of the Irish Catholic bourgeoisie's materialism and disregard of culture, and to the figure of Maud Gonne, the woman he loved, and Yeats's dear friend and patron Lady Augusta Gregory. The title of the collection references the responsibilities that the individual, and most of all the artist, has towards his family, society, his country, towards art and life itself: personal, social, civic, national and aesthetic responsibilities.
