This study aims to establish a correlation between genealogical relationship and colexification patterns in the verbal semantic domain of perception. By adopting Viberg’s dynamic system of perception verbs, instances of colexification are identified both within it and among the five sense modalities in a sample consisting of Romance and Germanic languages. Data are collected by means of lexical databases such as DatSemShift and CLICS and a conceptual questionnaire expressly designed for this task. Results point to separate patterns of semantic associations: pleonastic realization of the dynamic system (Germanic) and intrafield extensions (Romance). Moreover, data indicate that experience verbs behave differently in these groups, being heavy and ‘naturally’ polysemous in the former, polyfunctional and similar to light verbs in the latter.
