Thesis objective The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how the mental coach can help athletes with the use of specific exercises to improve the management of emotions that affect sports performance. Methodology, sources and tools used The work was carried out by researching and analyzing academic articles, specialized journals and literature books about emotions in sports and the role of the mental coach. In particular the research was made using Pubmed, Google Scholar. Stages of the thesis The thesis is developed starting from an introduction to the topic, and then describing the emotions and theories related to them in the first and second chapter. The third chapter focuses on the emotions of the sportsman and how them influence sports performance, professional or not. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the figure of the mental coach and how his work is essential to obtain better control of the emotions arising from sports. Results and conclusions In conclusion it has emerged that the mental coach has a fundamental role for the athlete, as it allows to control and regulate emotions such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear and situations that can negatively affect performance. With the use of specific exercises such as meditation, breathing control, imagery and muscle relaxation, the performance of more than 50% is affected by the achievement of the goal set by the athlete and in some cases, as stated by mental coach Daniele Popolizio, 70%. The work of the mental coach is therefore part, together with the training of the technique-tactics and the athletic preparation, of the three fundamental components for achieving optimal performance.
