Covid-19 e Big Pharma: l’impatto della pandemia sui corsi azionari del settore farmaceutico

The present thesis has the objective to analyze the impact of the pandemic spreading and the effect of the development of the vaccine on the stock prices of the main pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies producing it. After a general introduction about how Covid-19 and the restrictions, imposed by the governments to limit its diffusion, have affected the global economies, the economic sectors and the financial markets, the present paper focuses on the analysis of the trend of the stock titles of Big Pharma companies taken into consideration. This work focuses, in particular, on the consequences that the announcement of the effectiveness of the vaccine have had on the share prices and on the returns. The purpose of this thesis is to show the differences between producing and non-producing companies of the Covid-19 vaccine and, among the producing ones, the differences between big pharmaceutical giants, like Pfizer, and the smaller ones, like BioNtech.

La presente tesi ha l’obiettivo di analizzare l’impatto della diffusione pandemica e l’effetto dello sviluppo del vaccino sui prezzi azionari delle principali aziende farmaceutiche e biotecnologiche produttrici dello stesso. Dopo una panoramica generale di come il Covid-19 e le restrizioni, imposte dai governi per limitarne la diffusione, abbiano influenzato le economie globali, i settori economici e i mercati finanziari, il presente studio si focalizza sull’analisi dell’andamento dei titoli azionari delle aziende Big Pharma prese in considerazione. Questo lavoro si focalizza, in particolare, sulle conseguenze che l’annuncio dell’efficacia del vaccino ha avuto sui prezzi azionari e sui rendimenti. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è mostrare le differenze tra i produttori e non-produttori del vaccino anti-Covid-19 e, nell’ambito dei produttori, le differenze tra i colossi farmaceutici, come Pfizer, e le aziende più piccole, come BioNtech.
