Community experience: live with us! A proposal to revitalise Shanghai Lilong with a new B&B model

Shanghai fast development is changing the framework of the city and the old Lilong typology is replaced by the modern tower, deleting the image of the past. The old architectural character rapresenting the beginning of Shanghai like an international harbor compares to the spectacular high-rise building of Lujiazui, the new huge financial centre, and their contrast indicates a multi-faceted identity of the city that has a clear vision of its future but at the same time forgets its origins. This thesis wants to re-think the urban trasformation starting from historical context to reply to the basic questions: Why and For Whom is it necessary still take into consideration the Lilong settlements? Those answers are going to drive on the way to set up a new model, based on the B&B logic, able to economically sustain the architectural revitalization of a Lilong neighbourhood and its community. The new scenario will find its design proposal in a block in the central area along the Shanghai Bund where a housing unit will be adapted to accomodation use while the Lilong relationship with the sorrounding will be rewritten by connecting old and new.

Il contrasto tra il vecchio carattere architettonico che rappresenta l'inizio di Shanghai come porto internazionale e l’adiacente moderno centro finanziario di Lujiazui indica un'identità multiforme di una città che ha una chiara visione del suo futuro ma allo stesso tempo non è interessata alle sue origini. Questa tesi vuole riflettere sulla trasformazione urbana in corso cercando di rispondere alle domande: Perché e per chi è necessario tenere ancora in considerazione la tipologia a Lilong? La ricerca guiderà verso la creazione di un nuovo modello, basato sulla logica del B&B, in grado di sostenere economicamente la rivitalizzazione architettonica di un quartiere di Lilong e della sua comunità. Il nuovo scenario troverà la sua proposta progettuale in un isolato nell'area centrale del Bund dove un'unità abitativa sarà adattata ad uso ricettivo mentre il rapporto del Lilong con l'intorno verrà riscritto dialogando tra vecchio e nuovo.
