Introduction In recent years, information and communication technologies have developed as a means of promoting health education and adapting it to the needs of new generations. In the specific area of breastfeeding, the market offers numerous mobile apps, but currently there is no information on the quality and completeness of the content, nor a shared assessment framework. Therefore, the aim of this project is to investigate the methods, tools and approaches described in the literature for the evaluation of mobile breastfeeding apps and propose a conceptual framework for the evaluation of the latter. Methods A methodological and multiphase study design has been designed, which involves the implementation of three design phases, the first two of which were conducted from March to September 2021. The first phase provided for an additional review of the literature to identify the frameworks, tools and criteria used for the evaluation of mobile breastfeeding apps. The second phase included a peer-debriefing process between a group of experts to extrapolate the main evaluation criteria and the specific evaluation indicators of mobile apps. The third phase, not yet completed, will aim to define a conceptual framework for evaluating mobile-apps on breastfeeding, through a qualitative validation approach of the content of the identified criteria and a subsequent consensus statement. Results Five different conceptual frameworks have been identified, represented by the Breastfeeding Guidelines and Health App Reference Standards, which have guided the authors in the evaluation of mobile-apps on breastfeeding, without, however, being specific to the assessment of the latter. These frameworks constitute the theoretical framework within which the evaluation methods of mobile-apps on breastfeeding are inserted. In addition, 7 mobile app quality assessment tools have been identified. Following the synthesis of the identified frameworks and tools, 14 evaluation criteria have been extrapolated, representing a first categorization of the basic elements for the quality assessment of these mobile apps. Conclusions A mobile app evaluation framework on breastfeeding is currently not available in the literature. There is, in fact, a wide variability in the conceptual and methodological approaches related to the quality evaluation of these mobile-apps. In this regard, the results presented are a first attempt to define the minimum assessment criteria (i.e. essential) for the definition of a conceptual framework for evaluating mobile-apps on breastfeeding. Keywords: Mobile Apps, mobile applications, breastfeeding.
