Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related measures, most Italian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) have been affected from extremely negative economic effects. In this context, employees’ capacity to function effectively at work is vital for the long-term survival of SMEs, as it enables SMEs to compete in the present market situation. Drawing on the Conservation of Resources theory, the current dissertation aims to explore Italian SMEs employees’ occupational wellbeing conditions, identifying potential personal resources able to protect them from the development of negative outcomes. 101 employees working in SMEs (located in the province of Reggio Calabria) completed anonymous questionnaires analysing: resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale; CD-RISC), work-family conflict (Work-Family Conflict & Family-Work Conflict Scale), psychosomatic health (General Health Questionnaire-12, GHQ-12), fear of the economic crisis (Stress Questionnaire), COVID-19-related coping self-efficacy (Trauma-Related Coping Self-Efficacy Scale), post-traumatic stress symptoms (Impact of Event Scale-revised, IES-R) and job satisfaction (a single item. Descriptive, correlational and regression analyses were performed. The results show that workers with high resilience scores report greater COVID-19-related coping self-efficacy. This latter personal resource is negatively correlated with post-traumatic stress symptoms and fear of the economic crisis. Conversely, greater work-family conflict is associated with greater psycho-somatic malaise and higher fear of the economic crisis levels. In conclusion, trauma-related coping self-efficacy represents an important personal resource that can be strengthened through appropriate trainings in order to sustain employees working in SMEs during the COVID-19 outbreak.
