Multilevel marketing (MLM) is a retail selling channel that use independent distributors not only to buy and resell products but also to recruit new distributors into a growing network over time. This business has a negative image in the minds of many individuals because many people argue that multilevel marketing companies are illegal pyramid schemes and that such companies are unethical. In recent years organizations are increasingly seeking customer participation and engagement with their brands, indeed a brand is a distinctive sign developed by the selling company to identify its offer and differentiate it from that of its competitors. Brand equity created by customers’ loyalty brings benefits not only to customers but also to other stakeholders and customers’ loyal support of a brand may contribute to the creation of competitive advantage for a firm. In the era of rapid development of information, network marketing has gradually become one of the most popular marketing methods indeed progress in information technology has resulted in the emergence of a multitude of social media. The Amway company was the first in the world to use the network marketing model over 60 years ago but in recent years the phenomenon of network marketing has exploded and is constantly growing thanks to the increasingly massive spread of the Internet and the growth of e-commerce.
Il marketing multilivello (MLM) è un canale di vendita al dettaglio che utilizza distributori indipendenti non solo per acquistare e rivendere prodotti, ma anche per reclutare nuovi distributori in una rete in crescita nel tempo. Questa attività ha un'immagine negativa nella mente di molti individui; infatti, molte persone sostengono che le società di marketing multilivello sono schemi piramidali illegali e che tali società non sono etiche. Negli ultimi anni le organizzazioni cercano sempre più la partecipazione e il coinvolgimento dei clienti con i loro marchi; infatti, un marchio è un segno distintivo sviluppato dall'azienda venditrice per identificare la propria offerta e differenziarla da quella dei suoi concorrenti. La brand equity creata dalla fedeltà dei clienti porta benefici non solo ai clienti, ma anche agli altri stakeholder e il sostegno fedele di un marchio da parte dei clienti può contribuire alla creazione di un vantaggio competitivo per un'azienda. Nell'era del rapido sviluppo dell'informazione, il network marketing è diventato gradualmente uno dei metodi di marketing più popolari, infatti i progressi nella tecnologia dell'informazione hanno portato alla nascita di una moltitudine di social media. L'azienda Amway è stata la prima al mondo ad utilizzare il modello del network marketing oltre 60 anni fa ma negli ultimi anni il fenomeno del network marketing è esploso ed è in costante crescita grazie alla diffusione sempre più massiccia di Internet e alla crescita dell'e-commerce.
