The thesis deals with the period of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and in particular focuses on the two poets Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley. After presenting them separately, the centre of attention shifts on defining their deep friendship, exemplary in a place of divisions and tensions, present ever since the 16th century on Irish territory. Indeed, both poets, even if coming from two different religions and origins, managed to find a common dialogue, especially linked to the centrality of the poetic exercise. Poetry has helped Heaney and Longley in coping with these tensions, and consequently has encouraged their union in this tragedy. Moreover, what is also central in the thesis is trying to define the concern of these poets and those of the North in having had to acquire the role of spokesperson; the responsibilities they had in order to find meaning to the Troubles’ violence and hatred, still present in contemporary times.

Abstract
Moreover, what is also central in the thesis is trying to define the concern of these poets and those of the North in having had to acquire the role of spokesperson; the responsibilities they had in order to find meaning to the Troubles’ violence and hatred, still present in contemporary times.È consentito all'utente scaricare e condividere i documenti disponibili a testo pieno in UNITESI UNIPV nel rispetto della licenza Creative Commons del tipo CC BY NC ND.
