Endometriosis is a common, benign chronic inflammatory condition affecting one in ten women of reproductive age. It is defined as presence of endometrial gland and stroma outside the uterine cavity. Its prevalence increases to 50% in infertile patients. The gold standard diagnostic technique is laparoscopic visualization with endoscopic confirmation, even though transvaginal ultrasound and pelvic MRI are highly suggestive. Endometriotic patients often experience years of diagnostic delay. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether the NLR has a role in the clinical management of patients with endometriosis. 73 patients who underwent surgery for endometriosis were analysed in the study. The main result is that there is a strong correlation between the neutrophile/lymphocyte ration and the chronic pelvic pain experienced by the patients. The role of neutrophile/lymphocyte ratio in clinical practice can be an objective, measurable proxy of chronic pelvic pain thus being a valuable tool in the diagnosis of endometriosis (and as a mean to reduce the diagnostic delay) and as a precious aid in the clinical decision-making process.

Abstract

Neutrophile to lymphocyte ratio in deep infiltrating endometriosis and its role in clinical practice
