The purpose of this thesis is to provide a complete and comprehensive description of the role of the Chief Innovation Officer (CInO) with particular reference to their duties, the actions undertaken and the impact that the insertion of this new figure within the staff has on company dynamics and on corporate culture. The study is based primarily on 12 in-depth interviews conducted with as many CInOs operating in Italy and on the data collected through 202 questionnaires submitted to professionals in charge of managing innovation in their companies. Starting from the analysis of the existing academic literature, which considering the novelty of the role is still relatively limited, we will provide an analytical analysis of the aforementioned interviews through the application of the ‘Gioia Methodology’ – taking into consideration the personal experiences of established professionals in the sector, we will try to identify their salient features and the strategies that they are adopting to promote innovation in their respective organizations. In summary, our aim is to deepen the knowledge of this figure and provide an overview of this rapidly growing but still little-known role, not only to contribute to the existing literature but to provide to the Chief Innovation Officers of today and tomorrow information that will help them to improve and better understand their role, in the light of the experiences of their peers.
