The unparallelled aging in the world population has brought about a certain incremental prevalence of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders overall. Alzheimer’s disease is considered to be the main cause of dementia worldwide, with a tendency to still increase its incidence and become more and more prevalent in the elderly population in the next few years and decades. The present study is aimed at investigating possible associations between different or dysbiotic microbial composition of the normal oral and gut microbial flora in individuals with Alzheimer's Disease, by analysing the groups of patients either positive or negative to a PET scan with Amyvid™ (Florbetapir 18 F) and controls. Descriptive metagenomic approach has been applied, together with bioinformatic analysis of data deriving from culture-independent 16S rRNA gene amplicon next generation sequencing. Further developments in the study of microbiome alterations in the elderly patients showing cognitive impairment could help define and improve novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
