In the last century the exponential growth of the global population and the continuous exodus from the countryside to the city has resulted in a rapid rate of urbanization and has seen the growth of a new urban context characterized by a big number of people concentrated in a limited area: High-Density cities. The fast construction process led to a multitude of large scale works of standardized urbanization which manifest many issues, such as the lack of spaces, uncontrolled environmental impact, and quality of life. So that, since the last decades, more attention is given to design buildings with a healthier, safer, and more sustainable impact on the city: it’s necessary to continue the research for new approaches on this existing reality. One possible solution is the Multi-functional Building: a complex system of coexistence of spaces and functions, an architectural object in which are considered all the issues that affect also the large scale, as functional heterogeneity, environmental sustainability, and human being liveability. Taking High-Density surrounding as an existent and consolidated precondition, this research work underlines a design strategy that could be a valid approach used to solve problems induced by this specific urban context. Space and lack of space, first of all, the people’s one, is the main object of this research work: it is where social relations and citizen’s activities take place and it is directly linked with the condition of existence for human-being. In High-Density different levels of space are needed, both in the air and underground, and these levels have to combine each other, to ensure in all of them a good quality in terms of physical and visual connections, air, light, and presence of greenery: working on this way the Design Strategy for a Multi-functional building located in High- Density surrounding will be studied and elaborated. There is no intention of an aesthetic definition of the architectural elements that make up building generated by High-Density, but this work has the significance to study how they can be designed in this specific context to promote the space quantity and quality. The final design, that came from the research, will be the expression of the k-concepts defined during the theoretical studio part. The building designed will be shaped thanks to the contextual critical and potential aspects that arise after the project area analysis. Abstract
