The research around theory of mind skills and social competence in middle childhood remains scarce. Previous studies on the subject have yielded varying and inconsistent results. This report aimed to look at the associations between theory of mind measured through strange stories task and social competence measured through peer nominations on ML (Most-Liked) and LL (Least-Liked) scales. The present study includes the longitudinal analysis of 187 Italian children with the aim to detect associations between the theory of mind at the first time point of data collection, and social competence one year later. Verbal ability, number of siblings and socio-economic status were utilized as control variables. The results did not indicate any significant longitudinal relationship between Time 1 theory of mind and Time 2 outcomes variables. However, there was a strong negative correlation between Time 1 theory of mind and LL (Least-Liked) nomination without controlling for the stability in individual differences in the LL nomination across time.

Abstract
However, there was a strong negative correlation between Time 1 theory of mind and LL (Least-Liked) nomination without controlling for the stability in individual differences in the LL nomination across time.È consentito all'utente scaricare e condividere i documenti disponibili a testo pieno in UNITESI UNIPV nel rispetto della licenza Creative Commons del tipo CC BY NC ND.
