In knowledge economy era, creative industry has gradually become an indispensable type in urban industrial structure and been concerned by more and more people. The creative industries have the characteristics of miniaturization, clustering and urbanization. As their physical embodiment, the creative industry cluster areas emerge. Many new forms of communication space appear at the same time. Such spaces are being highly used in creative industry cluster areas. This paper firstly proposes research questions based on the phenomena, and then takes the communication space in urban creative industry cluster areas as research object, and compares it with traditional public space after definition, followed by the analysis of its characteristics. Then, the paper does literature research on creative industry, creative people, and creative industry cluster areas. Most people still hold the ideas that “communication space equals to public space”and ”creative industry cluster area equals to closed creative park”. They pay little attention on communication space between private and public, and other clustering forms like urban street. The aim of this article is exploring the communication spaces with different forms, analyzing their types and characteristics, supplementing existing theories and applying the conclusion into practice. The paper sorts out more than 200 creative industry cluster areas within Shanghai Central, selects 18 typical cases from them and then does in-depth analysis by typology, comparative research and field research method. The conclusion includes 7 types of communication spaces (co-working space, shared terrace in low layers, corridor with communication function, atrium, small urban courtyard, inner street and urban street) and five factors affecting the quality of communication spaces (the accessibility, the ability to hold firms, the ability to hold events, whether to offer public services, and whether to have spatial features) . Finally, this paper selects the Guokang Road area in Shanghai as the site and apply the conclusion into urban design through the following guidelines:openness,connection, multi-level and multi-function in order to improve the quality of communication space in this area .
