USO E ABUSO DELL'ERITROPOIETINA

My graduation thesis titled “USE AND ABUSE OF THE ERYTHROPOIETIN” is a composition aimed at describing the function of the erythropoietin glycoprotein hormone. The introduction focused on what the hormones and the glycoproteins and their various functions are. Later, the first section of the composition explained blood composition, the hemoglobin, the erythropoietin and the hematopoiesis. The central section of the thesis provided with the definition of anemia and the kinds of anemia that may be present in the individual, such as the sickle cell anemia, iron-deficiency anemia and other typologies of anemia. Hereafter, we made an introduction related to the biotechnological drugs and we dealt with the principal item of the thesis, that is the erythropoietin, its molecular structure, its receptors and its pharmacodynamics and its pharmacokinetic. The final section talked about the EPO medicine which is produced by the genetic engineering and we made some drugs examples (Epoietina Alfa, Darbepoetina alfa and C.E.R.A.). Moreover, we debated on the bad effects caused by the EPO drug on the individual and/or patient health and on the abuse of the EPO used in sports to improve physical performance.

La mia tesi di Laurea dal titolo “USO E ABUSO DELL’ERITROPOIETINA”, è un elaborato rivolto a descrivere la funzione dell’ormone glicoproteico eritropoietina. Nell’introduzione si è focalizzata l’attenzione su che cosa sono gli ormoni e le glicoproteine e le loro molteplici funzioni. Successivamente nella prima parte dell’elaborato, è stata spiegata la composizione del sangue, l’emoglobina, l’eritropoiesi e l’emopoiesi. Nella parte centrale della tesi è stata data la definizione di anemia, e le anemie che possono essere presenti nell’individuo, quali per esempio l’anemia falciforme, l’anemia da carenza di ferro e altri tipi di anemie. In seguito è stata fatta una premessa sui farmaci biotecnologici e si è entrati nel tema principale della tesi, ossia l’eritropoietina; la sua struttura molecolare, i suoi recettori e la sua farmacodinamica e la farmacocinetica. Nella parte finale si è discusso del farmaco a base di Epo ricombinante, e sono stati fatti degli esempi di farmaci (Epoietina Alfa, Darbepoetina alfa e C.E.R.A.). Si è trattato inoltre su gli effetti negativi che può provocare il farmaco per la salute dell’individuo e/o paziente e sull’abuso di EPO che viene utilizzato nella pratica sportiva per migliorare le prestazioni fisiche.
