Background 1: Workers' village in Shanghai Workers' village is a collection of residential houses that began construction in Shanghai in the early 1950s in order to solve the worker-class housing problem. Today's workers' village facilities are becoming old and shabby, the living environment is bad, and the aging problem is serious. In the context of Shanghai's urban renewal, as a group of old houses that lasted more than half a century, workers' village is also facing the need for renovation. Background 2:Aging in workers’ village In 2007, the World Health Organization defined “aging society” as a population of over 60 years old in a region or country reaching more than 10% of the total population or more than 7% of people over 65 years of age, that is, the region is considered to be entering an aging society. According to the ageing standards and definitions, China has already been in the early stages of an aging society in 2000. With the deepening of aging society, China faces the challenges and pressures of old-age problems. Shanghai is the first city in China to enter an aging society with the highest population of aging. Shanghai's aging population is continuing steadily improving. According to the survey data from our research group, at present, the proportion of the population over 60 years old in Shanghai workers' villages is more than 30%. Faced with a serious problem of aging, it is imperative to carry out reasonable and appropriate renovation for workers' villages. Research Content: This paper selects all the existing workers' villages in the scope of Shanghai Hongkou District as the research object. Based on the investigation and research, this paper proposes renewal design guidelines for workers’ village in Hongkou District. Then take some workers’ villages within Central functional area of Hongkou district as examples, provide an aging-friendly renewal design proposals. The content of this paper is divided into four chapters, the core content of which is Chapters 2 and 3: Chapter 1: Introduce the research background, concept and main content. Chapter 2: Conducting an investigation and research on the urban planning prospect of Hongkou district and workers' villages in Hongkou district. Then sorting out the diachronic history and current situation of these workers’ villages. Analyse the present situation, renewal demand, reform policy and renewal targets . Chapter 3: On the basis of the analysis of above Chapters, work out design guidelines for workers' villages in Hongkou district including 3 aspects: apartment, external environment and service facilities. Chapter 4: Summary of research content and conclusion.
