The thesis aims to investigate music as a clinical tool in the treatment of trauma. Specifically, memory and emotion-related dysfunctions are chosen to be reviewed with the corresponding neuroscientific findings. Neural activations during music listening and performing are examined. The results show that several brain regions associated with memory and emotion activate with musical activities. Furthermore, Trauma-related structural and functional impairments and behavioral manifestations are addressed. It is seen that neural correlates of music listening and performing can be therapeutic for dysfunctions caused by prolonged stress of trauma. Additionally, music listening and performing as a type of therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is discussed. To that end, pieces of literature related to shared neurological pathways of trauma and music are reviewed. Finally, it is seen that music listening, and performing have beneficial effects on trauma-related symptoms. Music can be used as a therapeutic tool and to improve the quality of treatment as well.
