The main objective of the present Master thesis is to introduce a new patent, a Compact Steel Damper, that through numerical studies and experimental testing has demonstrated considerable potential but also a set of important problems on which this thesis is focused. In the very first part of the present work it is provided a critical comparison of various supplemental damping systems, followed by a brief introduction to the new compact damper. In the second part an overview of the methodology of the numerical study carried out is created and then a reference to the buckling problem of CHS when in compression is proposed as well. The latest part is reserved to the obtained numerical study results together with a brief discussion of some of the experimental ones and to the provision of a complete assessment, including advantages and limitations of the performance of structures equipped with the element in question.
