THE ROLE OF SPIRITUAL SCENARIOS IN SOCIAL HOUSING DESIGN

Social housing architecture in Italy is struggling with the theme of integration. Design in multi ethnic districts is currently under evolution and religious pluralism is often not considered in the design process. The present thesis discusses the positive effect that design for religion pluralism will have on social housing, both in private and public sphere. The research points out the need of architects to create a proper context for faiths to be perpetuated. Architecture for living spirituality can ensure the perpetuation of immigrants’ identity together with the establishment of integration with other communities. A survey on sacred architecture across China and Europe together with literature review on contemporary sacred architecture supports the design for a multi ethnic building in Milan. Specific religious requirements discovered in the literature review and field study are accomplished in the design.
