Cinema Therapy, a technique of Art Therapy, leverages the metaphorical language of cinema to support the therapeutic journey. This study broadens the theoretical and scientific landscape of Cinema Therapy by analyzing how three film genres—Animated, Period Drama, and Horror/Fantasy—influence viewers' identification with common emotional-relational themes such as Friendship, Love, Family Conflicts, and Bereavement. Based on the premise that film metaphors foster empathy and identification, a repeated measures experimental design was set up involving a sample of 29 adult participants. Each subject participated in four sessions, during which they watched, in random order, three short films on one of the four themes. After the viewing of each short film, the EDI Scale was administered to measure empathy and identification. In total, 348 responses were collected (12 per participant), which were later investigated through parametric analyses and post-hoc tests to identify significant differences between genres and levels of identification. The results show that the Animated genre most strongly promotes identification in every emotional-relational theme, with significant differences in Friendship, Family Conflicts, and Bereavement. The Period Drama and Horror/Fantasy genres showed variable effectiveness, with average results always being lower. This suggests that the choice of film genre significantly influences identification and the therapeutic effectiveness of Cinema Therapy, indicating that more accessible and visually evocative films can enhance the therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
This suggests that the choice of film genre significantly influences identification and the therapeutic effectiveness of Cinema Therapy, indicating that more accessible and visually evocative films can enhance the therapeutic intervention.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
