The intention of this thesis is to explore the lives of prostitutes during the Roman Empire, and whether cult and religious festivals provided them a reprieve from their rather bleak existence, or perhaps, some form of freedom. Particular attention will be placed on the goddess Venus, and her relationship to prostitutes. Due to the Eastern ties of the goddess, an analysis of her predecessors will be made, as well as a comparison and contrast of prostitution in Rome and its neighbours.
