Prosociality refers to the set of dispositions, behaviors and motivations focused to promote the well-being of others. It indicates the individual tendency to act to ensure positive effects on other people, without the expectation of personal gain. Various studies indicate the link between increased prosocial behavior and ageing, many of which have investigated the role of prosociality in the monetary domain, underlining the tendency of the elderly individual to be more prosocial than young people in this domain. The aim of the present study is to investigate in which context, monetary or temporal, older adults are more likely to provide help to a person in difficulty. Through the creation of short manipulated online conversations with a fictitious participant and the subsequent administration of the Prosocial Helping Task, the prosocial tendency of the elderly was assessed in the two domains. The results confirm the tendency of older adults to be more prosocial in the domain of money rather than in that of time, donating more monetary resources to individuals perceived as more in need of money. These findings also foster a better understanding of the dark side of prosociality, as excessive levels of generosity can make older adults more vulnerable to scams or exploitation.

Abstract
These findings also foster a better understanding of the dark side of prosociality, as excessive levels of generosity can make older adults more vulnerable to scams or exploitation.È consentito all'utente scaricare e condividere i documenti disponibili a testo pieno in UNITESI UNIPV nel rispetto della licenza Creative Commons del tipo CC BY NC ND.
