Validation of the Affective Set Shifting Task and Affective Control in Ugandan Adolescents

Set shifting is a key executive function that allows people to flexibly switch between stimulus-response sets when environmental regularities change. Recent research suggests that this ability could be impacted by the presence of affective stimuli. This version of the construct, defined as affective set shifting, showed associations with mental health in adolescence, a crucial period for the first onset of psychiatric symptoms. Given the overrepresentation of Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic (WEIRD) populations in the sciences, properly validating this construct and the task requires testing on diverse demographics. This thesis aims to validate a novel measure of affective set shifting in the adolescents of rural Uganda.

L'affective set shifting è una funzione esecutiva chiave che permette alle persone di passare in modo flessibile da un insieme di stimolo-risposta a un altro quando le regolarità ambientali cambiano. Ricerche recenti suggeriscono che questa capacità potrebbe essere influenzata dalla presenza di stimoli affettivi. Questa versione del costrutto, definita come affective set shifting, ha mostrato associazioni con la salute mentale nell’adolescenza, un periodo cruciale per l'insorgenza dei primi sintomi psichiatrici. Data la sovrarappresentazione delle popolazioni occidentali, istruite, industrializzate, ricche e democratiche (WEIRD) nelle scienze, una corretta validazione di questo costrutto e del relativo compito richiede test su gruppi demografici diversi. Questa tesi mira a validare una nuova misura di affective set shifting negli adolescenti delle aree rurali dell'Uganda.
