This thesis analyses the perception of YouTube users about the femicide of Giulia Cecchettin, a twenty-two-year-old Venetian woman killed by her ex-partner Filippo Turetta, in November 2023. This study represents the third case study of this kind and is part of a broader research project on the linguistic representation and perception of gender-based violence in digital media. Given the massive media resonance of the case, the research aims to investigate how YouTube users' discourses are articulated, identifying both the most discussed elements and how they are addressed. Specifically, it aims to verify the symbolic role that the Cecchettin case has taken in the fight against gender-based violence, investigate what the community's response was to the words of the Cecchettin family and whether these interventions have contributed to the proliferation of discourses related to gender-based violence, which social actors are most discussed and cited by users and what the sentiment associated with them is. To this end, the comments published under 33 videos regarding this femicide produced over three weeks were collected, framed within the disappearance of Giulia Cecchettin e Filippo Turetta and the celebration of Giulia Cecchettin's funeral. The corpus, composed of 1500 comments, was annotated by 10 voluntary participants enrolled in the Master's Degree in Theoretical, Applied and Modern Languages’ Linguistics at the University of Pavia who, divided into two groups, annotated 750 comments each. The annotation scheme was developed specifically for this research, built on existing schemas used in the two previous studies and refined in light of the experience gained. The results show how over the course of the three weeks there was a shift in attention initially focused on the victim's social network, then shifted to the perpetrator once the outcome of the disappearance is made public and finally towards the media responsible for disseminating the news; throughout the entire period analyzed, discussions related to the femicide event also remain frequent. During the first two weeks, most of the aggressive sentiment expressed was directed towards the perpetrator and then directed towards the media. In attributing responsibility, as long as it was still believed to be a case of a missing person, the main culprits were identified in the perpetrator and his social network, the latter element replaced by the institutions once the nature of the crime was made known. Rape culture becomes the third most discussed element after the discovery of the body, but does not find the same attention neither in the first and the third sections. The thesis ends with a thorough discussion of the limitations both in the annotation scheme and the choice of annotators and of some suggestions to optimize future research in this field.
