Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, is an adaptogenic plant widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to deal with stress and related disorders such as anxiety, insomnia and depression. This plant is appreciated for its ability to help the body adapt and better manage stressful situations, contributing to the improvement of overall well-being. In the treatment of these disorders, non-drug-behavioural and pharmacological approaches are proposed. The former include stress management methods, cognitive and behavioral therapies, relaxation techniques and mindfulness, while the latter may include the use of drugs such as benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics. Subsequently, the thesis focuses on the botanical and taxonomic description of the Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, also examining its phytochemical composition and highlighting the main active components responsible for its beneficial effects on human health. In order to understand how Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal can exert its beneficial effects on the human body, supporting stress management and improving psychophysical well-being we have examined its mechanisms of action. The thesis is aimed at exploring also the historical evolution of the Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, from its origins in India, highlighting its historical and cultural value up to the growing interest and consumption in Europe and Italy, driven by the growing scientific evidence of its multiple benefits to human health and well-being. This growing interest of pharmaceutical companies, integrator manufacturers and distributors in the global natural health market has led to examining the role and interests of stakeholders along the production and commercial supply chain of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal. In fact, in the European and Italian context, the Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal has become increasingly popular as a dietary supplement and phytotherapeutic product, with a growing demand both in pharmacies and in large-scale retail (GDO). However, the introduction of e-commerce has radically changed the landscape, making more accessible to consumers a wide range of products based on Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal online. To conclude, with the growing awareness and confidence in Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, it is likely to witness an expansion of the market and greater integration of this plant in the daily routine of health and well-being of people around the world.
