Il cammino intellettuale e le relazioni familiari di Altiero Spinelli in carcere e al confino.

The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the change of perspective of the politician Altiero Spinelli, who began his political career as a communist and ended it as a European federalist, and which occurred during the long period of imprisonment Spinelli served under the fascist dictatorship, from 1927 to 1943. In particular, this study seeks to assess the influence that the works Spinelli read in prison had on his political orientation, through the analysis of the letters he exchanged with his family members during these years. In fact, Spinelli asked his family to send him books to be read in prison, or information on the publishing house and the price for ordering them; often, once he had finished a book, he also exchanged some comments on the work he had read with his family members, and how it had changed his way of perceiving the world. In addition, the discussions Spinelli had with the male members of the family, his father Carlo and his two brothers, Veniero and Cerilo, are of vital importance, through which we have precise indications of the occurrence of certain evolutions of thought and the works that had particular merit in having inspired them. Alongside the study of Altiero Spinelli's federalist passage, important information on the relationship between Spinelli and each individual family member has been extrapolated from the numerous family correspondence, in an attempt to understand the influence that the family as a whole, but also the individual family member, had on Spinelli's political events during the years of imprisonment and confinement, from the evolution of political thought to support in practical matters and during the first period after the birth of the group of federalists on the island of Ventotene. What emerges is that Spinelli's arrest created, given the forced immobility, the right temporal conditions for an intellectual deepening of a magnitude hardly practicable in a normal context of active life, studded with commitments, and the spiritual conditions, given that Spinelli, although he was not expelled from the party upon entering prison, was nonetheless placed in a condition of observer of the facts of national politics, especially during the two and a half years of solitary confinement, a period in which not by chance Spinelli ended up devaluing his communist convictions. On his way to federalist positions Spinelli was accompanied by some family members, by others he was hindered. People who shared his struggle were welcomed on his political path: those who tried to come between him and politics were instead turned away, because for Spinelli politics was a reason for living.

Questa tesi di ricerca si pone come scopo quello di analizzare il cambiamento di prospettiva del politico Altiero Spinelli, che iniziò la propria carriera politica come comunista e la concluse da federalista europeo, e che avvenne durante il lungo periodo di detenzione che Spinelli scontò sotto la dittatura fascista, dal 1927 al 1943. In particolare, questo studio cerca di valutare l'influenza che ebbero le opere che Spinelli lesse in carcere sul suo orientamento politico, attraverso l'analisi delle lettere che egli scambiò con i propri familiari durante tali anni. Infatti, alla famiglia Spinelli chiese di spedire libri da poter leggere in carcere, oppure informazioni sulla casa editrice e sul prezzo per poterli ordinare; spesso, una volta finito un libro, egli scambiò anche qualche commento sull'opera letta con i familiari, e come questa avesse modificato il suo modo di percepire il mondo. Inoltre, sono di vitale importanza le discussioni che Spinelli ebbe con i membri maschi della famiglia, il padre Carlo e i due fratelli, Veniero e Cerilo, attraverso cui si hanno indicazioni precise sull'avvenimento di certe evoluzioni di pensiero e sulle opere che ebbero un particolare merito nell'averle scaturite. Accanto allo studio del passaggio federalista di Altiero Spinelli, dalla numerosa corrispondenza familiare sono state estrapolate importanti informazioni sul rapporto tra Spinelli e ogni singolo familiare, nel tentativo di comprendere l'influsso che ebbe la famiglia come insieme, ma anche il singolo familiare, sulle vicende politiche di Spinelli negli anni del carcere e del confino, dall'evoluzione del pensiero politico al supporto nelle questioni pratiche e durante il primo periodo dopo la nascita del gruppo dei federalisti sull'isola di Ventotene. Ciò che emerge è che l'arresto di Spinelli creò, data la forzata immobilità, le condizioni temporali giuste per un approfondimento intellettuale di una portata difficilmente praticabile in un normale contesto di vita attiva, costellato di impegni, e le condizioni spirituali, dato che Spinelli, benché non fu espulso dal partito all'entrata in carcere, era comunque posto ad una condizione di osservatore dei fatti della politica nazionale, specialmente durante i due anni e mezzo di isolamento, periodo in cui non a caso Spinelli finì per svalutare le sue convinzioni comuniste. Nel suo cammino verso le posizioni federaliste Spinelli fu accompagnato da alcuni familiari, da altri fu ostacolato. Le persone che condivisero la sua battaglia furono accolte sul suo cammino politico: chi provò a frapporsi fra lui e la politica fu invece allontanato, perché per Spinelli la politica era una ragione di vita.
