ESPLORANDO LE CATENE DI VALORE GLOBALI NEL SETTORE AUTOMOBILISTICO IN NORD AMERICA: UN'ANALISI A LIVELLO INDUSTRIALE DELLE INTERAZIONI TRA GLI STATI UNITI E IL MESSICO, L'INFLUENZA DEL NAFTA/USMCA E GLI IMPATTI ECONOMICI SULL'ECONOMIA EMERGENTE DEL MESSICO.

This thesis explores the dynamics of Global Value Chains (GVCs) in the North American automotive industry, with a focus on the interactions between the United States and Mexico and the impacts of NAFTA and USMCA trade agreements. The objective is to analyze how GVCs affect the automotive industry and local economies, highlighting the economic repercussions for Mexico, an emerging economy deeply embedded in these cross-border industrial processes. Through a thorough literature review, the thesis synthesizes academic sources, industry reports and economic analyses to build a clear picture of the evolution of GVCs and their impact under first NAFTA and then USMCA. This analysis contributes to a better understanding of how industrial relations and production strategies are structured in the automotive industry between Mexico and the United States. What emerges from this research indicates that the regulatory changes introduced by the North American trade agreements have significantly affected Mexico's automotive industry, reshaping the landscape of exports and manufacturing operations, and affecting Mexico's competitiveness in the sector. These changes have had broad effects, also stimulating investment in higher value-added areas, but at the same time exacerbating challenges related to labor and manufacturing competitiveness. In conclusion, the thesis argues that GVCs facilitate economic integration between countries while requiring careful policies to balance economic growth and social equity. The observed dynamics are critical for formulating future economic and trade strategies and suggest a fertile area for further research, particularly in analyzing the long-term impacts of trade policies on emerging markets.

La presente tesi esplora le dinamiche delle Catene di Valore Globali (GVC) nell'industria automobilistica nordamericana, con particolare attenzione alle interazioni tra Stati Uniti e Messico e agli impatti degli accordi commerciali NAFTA e USMCA. L'obiettivo è analizzare come le GVC influenzino l'industria automobilistica e le economie locali, evidenziando le ripercussioni economiche per il Messico, un'economia emergente profondamente integrata in questi processi industriali transfrontalieri. Attraverso un'approfondita revisione bibliografica, la tesi sintetizza fonti accademiche, rapporti industriali e analisi economiche per costruire un quadro chiaro dell'evoluzione delle GVC e del loro impatto sotto il regime del NAFTA prima e dell'USMCA poi. Questa analisi contribuisce a comprendere meglio come siano strutturate le relazioni industriali e le strategie di produzione nell'ambito automobilistico tra Messico e Stati Uniti. Ciò che emerge da questa ricerca indica che le modifiche normative introdotte con gli accordi commerciali nordamericani hanno significativamente influenzato l'industria automobilistica del Messico, ridisegnando il panorama delle esportazioni e delle operazioni produttive, e incidendo sulla competitività del Messico nel settore. Questi cambiamenti hanno avuto effetti ampi, stimolando anche investimenti in aree a più alto valore aggiunto, ma allo stesso tempo esacerbando le sfide relative alla competitività lavorativa e produttiva. In conclusione, la tesi sostiene che le GVC facilitano l'integrazione economica tra paesi, richiedendo allo stesso tempo politiche attente per bilanciare crescita economica e equità sociale. Le dinamiche osservate sono fondamentali per la formulazione di strategie economiche e commerciali future e suggeriscono un'area fertile per ulteriori ricerche, particolarmente nell'analisi degli impatti a lungo termine delle politiche commerciali sui mercati emergenti.
