This research critically examines the evolution of corporate sustainability within the energy sector, focusing on Eni as a case study. The research explores Eni’s historical trajectory, from its foundational years under the Mattei Formula to its transformative adaptation into an integrated energy company committed to sustainability. Through a multidimensional framework addressing leadership, strategic alignment, systematic methodologies, operational integration, reporting practices, and historical context, the study investigates how Eni reconciles economic performance with environmental responsibility. The findings underscore Eni's proactive integration of sustainability into corporate governance and operational decision-making. Key advancements include pioneering investments in renewable energy, biorefineries, and carbon capture technologies, as well as innovative reporting mechanisms aligned with European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Despite notable progress, challenges persist regarding transparency, scalability of initiatives, and alignment with global climate objectives. By analyzing Eni's transition strategies and their alignment with both regulatory frameworks and market dynamics, this research contributes to the broader discourse on sustainability transitions in high-emission industries. Moreover, it provides theoretical insights and practical recommendations for navigating the complex intersection of profitability, regulatory compliance, and sustainability in the evolving global energy landscape.
Questa ricerca esamina in maniera critica l'evoluzione della sostenibilità aziendale nel settore energetico, focalizzandosi su Eni come caso studio. La ricerca esplora la traiettoria storica di Eni, dagli anni della sua fondazione sotto la Formula Mattei al suo adattamento trasformativo in una società energetica integrata impegnata nella sostenibilità. Attraverso un quadro multidimensionale che affronta leadership, allineamento strategico, metodologie sistematiche, integrazione operativa, pratiche di reporting e contesto storico, lo studio indaga su come l'Eni riesca a conciliare la performance economica con la responsabilità ambientale. I risultati evidenziano l'integrazione proattiva della sostenibilità nella governance aziendale e nel processo decisionale operativo di Eni. I principali progressi includono investimenti pionieristici nelle energie rinnovabili, nelle bioraffinerie e nelle tecnologie di cattura dell’anidride carbonica, nonché meccanismi innovativi di rendicontazione allineati agli European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Nonostante i notevoli progressi, persistono le sfide relative alla trasparenza, alla scalabilità delle iniziative e all'allineamento con gli obiettivi climatici globali. Analizzando le strategie di transizione dell'Eni e il loro allineamento sia con i quadri normativi che con la dinamica del mercato, questa ricerca contribuisce al più ampio discorso sulle transizioni di sostenibilità nelle industrie ad alta emissione. Inoltre, fornisce spunti teorici e raccomandazioni pratiche per navigare la complessa intersezione tra redditività, conformità normativa e sostenibilità nel panorama energetico globale in evoluzione.
