In recent years, the growing focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues has transformed the role of the financial system, which is called upon to support the transition towards a sustainable economic model. This thesis analyses the contribution of sustainable finance through: the regulatory and institutional framework, the behaviour of institutional investors and the development of green financial instruments. The first chapter reconstructs the conceptual and regulatory evolution of sustainable finance, from the Brundtland Report to the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement, with a focus on the main EU initiatives (Green Deal, Taxonomy, CSRD). The second chapter explores the strategic role of institutional investors in integrating ESG criteria into financial portfolios, highlighting the strategies adopted, the underlying drivers and the critical issues related to risk, return and information asymmetries. The third chapter provides an overview of the main green financial instruments - including green bonds, loans, derivatives and SME instruments - with a specific analysis on sovereign green bonds and the role of states in supporting the ecological transition. The thesis highlights how sustainable finance can be an effective tool for combining economic objectives with positive environmental and social impacts, while remaining open to complex challenges such as greenwashing and the need for standardisation.

Abstract
The thesis highlights how sustainable finance can be an effective tool for combining economic objectives with positive environmental and social impacts, while remaining open to complex challenges such as greenwashing and the need for standardisation.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
