Southern France, known in the ancient period as Gaul, was populated with multiple ports and settlements of the ancient Greeks. The foremost of these is Massalia, now the modern Marseille, which if often the focus of ancient Greek study in the region. This thesis instead strives to analyse the foundation and development of the other smaller ancient Greek port cities along the Mediterranean coast of Gaul in what is now the Cote d'Azur, and assess their relation to the regional power of Massalia.
