Le teorie dell'etichettamento nella prospettiva sociologica

This paper aims to analyze labeling theories within the sociological perspective, in order to investigate the mechanisms through which society contributes to the definition of deviance and the construction of deviant identities. The central point, which also serves as the starting premise of the discussion, is that deviance does not constitute an intrinsic quality of acts, but rather the product of a process of social reaction. The first chapter examines the content and development of labeling theories through an analysis of the works of renowned authors such as Howard S. Becker, Edwin M. Lemert, and Erving Goffman. The second chapter addresses the issue of the critical reception of these theories and analyzes the main objections raised against them. The third chapter applies theoretical concepts to concrete contexts, such as the labeling associated with being an immigrant, a person with disabilities, a prisoner, or a student. Furthermore, two different forms of labeling will be examined here: self-labeling and territorial labeling. The thesis seeks to provide a comprehensive and critical overview of labeling theories, highlighting both their limitations and their potential.

Il presente elaborato si pone l'obbiettivo di analizzare le teorie dell'etichettamento all'interno della prospettiva sociologica, per indagare i meccanismi attraverso i quali la società contribuisce alla definizione della devianza e alla costruzione di identità devianti. Punto centrale, nonché di partenza per l'avvio della riflessione è il presupposto che la devianza non costituisce una qualità intrinseca degli atti, bensì il prodotto di un processo di reazione sociale. Nel primo capitolo vengono esaminati i contenuti e gli sviluppi delle teorie dell'etichettamento tramite l'analisi delle opere di celebri autori come Howard S. Becker, Edwin M. Lemert e Erving Goffman. Il secondo capitolo affronta il tema della ricezione critica di queste teorie ed analizza le principali obiezioni mosse nei loro confronti. Il terzo capitolo applica i concetti teorici a contesti concreti, come l'etichettamento legato alla condizione di immigrato, di persona con disabilità, di detenuto o di studente. Inoltre, in questa sede verranno esaminate due forme diverse di etichettamento: l'auto-etichettamento e l'etichettamento su scala territoriale. La tesi si propone di offrire una visione complessiva e critica delle teorie dell'etichettamento, evidenziandone i limiti e le potenzialità.
