Background: Parents' personality has a substantial influence on their parenting. Consequently, it is crucial to analyze the link between personality and parenting, as well as the factors that moderate or mediate this association. Objectives: This research aims to explore the role that personality traits, styles or disorders play in parenting. A further objective is to analyze the variations in associations between personality and parenting, depending on the specific trait, style, or personality disorder being examined. Moreover, the study aims to identify the mechanisms that act as moderators and/or mediators in this relationship. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using the bibliographic databases PsycArticles, Scopus, and PubMed. The keywords utilized during the research and selection phase were: “parenting”, “parenting style”, “personality”, “personality trait”, “personality disorder”, or “personality style”. The review included only scientific articles written in English that described studies with samples composed of adults who had at least one son or daughter. The personality of the parent had to be assessed in relation to their parenting. Reviews, meta-analyses, validation of tools, techniques or interventions, presentations at conferences and studies focusing on cultural or genetic aspects were excluded. Results: A total of 32 articles were included in the systematic review. The review revealed significant associations between different aspects of the parent's personality and parenthood. Moreover, several factors that could mediate this relationship were identified. Discussion and conclusions: The results highlight the personality characteristics associated with more or less optimal parenting and the aspects on which it is possible to intervene to prevent negative outcomes or mitigate at risk situations. Keywords: parenting, parenting styles, personality, personality traits, personality disorder, systematic review
