Innovazione ed evoluzione del settore dei vaccini e dei trattamenti a mRNA. Un'analisi dei brevetti (2015-2025)

This thesis will analyse the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, focusing attention on the innovative path regarding mRNA vaccines. The goal will be to explain the composition of the sector by understanding the main players and their behavior. We will describe the characteristics of the sector with a primary geographical focus, analyzing how patents are distributed among the various countries, and which are the main protagonists in the world. Through patent analysis, using data collected from Google Patents, we will first create a series of descriptive statistics that will give us an idea of the composition of the sector. We will then move on to an econometric analysis that will allow us to understand the key variables that influence growth in the sector. The final results will provide us with a series of explanations on how important patent protection is and on which variables it is possible to define the success of a company or the value of a specific patent.

Questa tesi analizzerà i settori biotecnologico e farmaceutico, concentrandosi sul percorso innovativo riguardante i vaccini a mRNA. L'obiettivo sarà quello di spiegare la composizione del settore comprendendone i principali attori e il loro comportamento. Descriveremo le caratteristiche del settore con un focus geografico primario, analizzando come i brevetti sono distribuiti tra i vari Paesi e quali sono i principali protagonisti a livello mondiale. Attraverso l'analisi brevettuale, utilizzando i dati raccolti da Google Patents, creeremo innanzitutto una serie di statistiche descrittive che ci daranno un'idea della composizione del settore. Passeremo poi a un'analisi econometrica che ci permetterà di comprendere le variabili chiave che influenzano la crescita del settore. I risultati finali ci forniranno una serie di spiegazioni sull'importanza della tutela brevettuale e su quali variabili è possibile definire il successo di un'azienda o il valore di uno specifico brevetto.
