In this work, the aim was to investigate perceptions of the figure of ascaro within the Eritrean community in Milan. This is a qualitative analysis: I conducted 16 interviews between June and September 2025. Although forgotten in the post-colonial era by both sides, the colonial bond between Eritrea and Italy still arouses conflicting feelings among Eritreans towards their former mother country: between anger and bitterness for never having recognized the first colony and a sense of belonging and emotional closeness to a country that is, to all intents and purposes, their home. On the one hand, the Eritrean colonial imagination appears to be fragmented and pluralistic regarding the perception of Italian occupation, reflecting different thoughts and narratives, while perceptions of the post-colonial era are very similar, reflecting shared opinions and memories. I believe that giving more attention the to the voices of colonized peoples is an important step towards Italy and other European states building a national colonial consciousness.

On the one hand, the Eritrean colonial imagination appears to be fragmented and pluralistic regarding the perception of Italian occupation, reflecting different thoughts and narratives, while perceptions of the post-colonial era are very similar, reflecting shared opinions and memories.
