«I connotati di una sfida»: la Banca Commerciale Italiana nel primo dopoguerra (1919-1922)

The aim of the dissertation is to study the role of the Banca Commerciale Italiana in the economical and political processes of the first postwar period, in the years that immediately came before the rise to power of the fascist political movement. The research moved its steps from an investigation of the documents of the Banca Commerciale Italiana’s archives, whose property belongs to the Archivio storico dell’Intesa Sanpaolo. After consulting the described material, which was enriched from the readings of historiographic works and comments from intellectual of those times, the thesis was divided in three chapters. The first one analyzes the economic data of the written records of the institute’s administration council, the goal being the comprehension of the behaviour of Comit in years of harsh economic crisis, result of the First World War. In the second chapter, the focus is put on the events of the “climbs to the shares”. The owners of the banK had to protect their own shares from their rivals twice in the years that followed the Great War. At last, the third chapter proposes an analysis of the relations between the representatives of the BCI and national politics, which is given through an investigation of the documents produced by Giuseppe Toeplitz, at the time manager of the bank.

L’obiettivo della tesi è quello di studiare il ruolo della Banca Commerciale Italiana nei processi economici e politici del primo dopoguerra, negli anni immediatamente precedenti l’ascesa del movimento politico fascista. La ricerca ha mosso i propri passi da un setaccio dei fondi archivistici della BCI, parte del patrimonio dell’Archivio storico dell’Intesa Sanpaolo. In seguito alla consultazione del materiale in questione, accompagnato dalla lettura di importanti studi storiografici e commenti “in corso d’opera”, la tesi è stata suddivisa in tre capitoli. Il primo prende in analisi i dati economici presenti nei verbali del consiglio d’amministrazione dell’istituto, con l’obiettivo di comprendere la condotta della Comit in anni di recessione finanziaria, dovuta al primo conflitto mondiale. Nel secondo capitolo, il focus è sulla vicenda delle scalate alle banche. Per ben due volte, infatti, nel primo dopoguerra, i dirigenti della banca hanno dovuto difendere le proprie azioni da tentativi di accaparramento da parte di gruppi rivali. Infine, nel terzo capitolo, si propone un’analisi dei rapporti fra i rappresentanti della BCI e la politica italiana, attraverso delle carte provenienti dai fondi relativi a Giuseppe Toeplitz, all’epoca amministratore delegato della banca.
