The theoretical background of the present work refers to the investigation of parental regret. We speak of parental regret in the circumstance in which the parent expresses regret regarding the decision to have had children. Within this thesis, the different forms of maltreatment suffered by parents during childhood are explored - among them, sexual, emotional and physical abuse, as well as physical and emotional neglect - giving special attention to the possibility that such experiences increase the risk of experiencing parental regret. In addition, the possible impact of depressive symptomatology in parents was deepen. It has been analysed as a factor capable of mediating the relationship between traumas experienced during childhood and feelings of regret related to parenthood. To delve deeper into these issues, 123 Italian parents with a cohabiting child aged no more than 18 were recruited. The methodology used was quantitative in nature and included the administration of some specific instruments: the Parenthood Regret Scale (PRS), employed to detect parental regret; the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire — Short Form (CTQ-SF), used to assess the five dimensions of child maltreatment and finally the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), aimed at identifying the presence of symptoms attributable to a depressive condition. Thanks to the analyses conducted it was possible to identify the sociodemographic characteristics of the Italian sample in relation to parental regret. Significant correlations emerged between all five dimensions of child maltreatment and regret related to parenthood. There was also a relevant correlation between depressive symptoms and regret. Mediation analysis showed that depression represents a significant mediator between emotional neglect and parental regret. Differently, sexual abuse would appear to have a direct effect on regret, regardless of depressive symptomatology. The results highlight how experiences of child maltreatment, together with the depressive symptoms that can result, play a crucial role in influencing parental experience and the possibility of feeling regret. For this reason, it may be useful not only to adopt a longitudinal research type, in order to observe the evolution of the phenomenon over time, but also to develop parenting support tools, focused on the recognition and management of emotions, so as to prevent and reduce feelings of parental regret.
