Parenting constitutes a fundamental aspect of an individual’s life. Over time, research has focused its attention on various aspects of this construct, among which are coparenting and maternal gatekeeping. Another crucial theme worthy of note is parental mental health. These three constructs have proven to be of significant importance for effective parenting and the heathy development of children. In light of the preceding literature, the present study was designed to investigate the relationship between parental psychopathology and the quality of coparenting. Furthermore, the mediating role of maternal gatekeeping within the aforementioned link was analysed. It was hypothesised that higher levels of psychopathology in mothers or fathers would correlate with lower-quality coparenting. It was also postulated that maternal gatekeeping, conceptualised across its three dimensions, would act as a mediating mechanism within the relationship. For the purpose of data collection, a online self-report questionnaire was administered to parents with at least one minor child. A total of 127 parents correctly completed the study measures, ranging in age from 26 to 63 years (M = 44.5; DS = 8.18). Of these, 83.5% (N = 106) identified as female and 16.5% (N = 21) as male. The BCRS was utilised for measuring the quality of coparenting, the DASS-21 for assessing parental psychopathology, and the MG for investigating maternal gatekeeping. The results confirmed the first hypothesis, as a significant and negative association was found, the effects of which are directed from parental psychopathology to the quality of coparenting. The second hypothesis was only partially confirmed, since in addition to a direct effect being detected, the differentiated family roles dimension did not prove to mediate the relationship. Future studies could further investigate this latter point, while also employing a sample with greater paternal representation. Keywords: coparenting, maternal gatekeeping, parental psychopathology, BCRS (Brief Coparenting Relationship Scale), DASS-21 (The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21), MG (Maternal Gatekeeping).
