The fortified walls and gates of ancient Pavia, a city with rich historical significance, serve as key remnants of its defensive architecture. Pavia, historically known as Ticinum, was a Roman stronghold and later became a strategic city during the Lombard and Carolingian eras. The construction and expansion of its walls from the Roman period through the Middle Ages reflect the city’s military importance, fortification strategies, and evolving urban landscape. Despite the ravages of time, warfare, and modernization, sections of Pavia’s fortified walls and historic gates, such as Porta Nuova, Porta Calcinara, and Porta Milano, remain standing today as well as some Spanish bastions. These structures not only symbolize the city’s ancient past but also contribute to its cultural identity at large. This thesis aims to explore the historical development of Pavia’s fortifications, from their Roman foundations to their medieval expansions, and examine their current state of preservation. A conservative approach to restoration is advocated, emphasizing the need to balance preservation with contemporary urban demands. Furthermore, the study investigates how these monuments can be integrated into modern tourism strategies to enhance cultural heritage, promote sustainable tourism, and foster economic growth. Through a combination of historical analysis, conservation methodology, and tourism development, the study aims to offer a comprehensive strategy to preserve Pavia’s fortified legacy while making it accessible and engaging for future generations.

Abstract
Through a combination of historical analysis, conservation methodology, and tourism development, the study aims to offer a comprehensive strategy to preserve Pavia’s fortified legacy while making it accessible and engaging for future generations.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
