The thesis examines the Great Irish Famine (1845–1852) through the lens of Joseph O’Connor’s novel Star of the Sea. The literary work is used as a tool to explore the historical, social, and cultural dynamics of the famine, creating a dialogue between literary and documentary sources. The analysis highlights how the novel, set during the Atlantic crossing of a group of Irish emigrants, offers a complex and multilayered perspective on the effects of the famine, the migratory experience, and the tensions surrounding class and national identity.

La tesi analizza la Grande Carestia irlandese (1845-1852) attraverso la lente del romanzo Star of the Sea di Joseph O’Connor. L’opera narrativa viene utilizzata come strumento per approfondire le dinamiche storiche, sociali e culturali della carestia, mettendo in dialogo fonti letterarie e documentarie. L’analisi evidenzia come il romanzo, ambientato durante la traversata atlantica di un gruppo di emigranti irlandesi, offra una prospettiva complessa e stratificata sugli effetti della carestia, sull’esperienza migratoria e sulle tensioni di classe e identità nazionale.
