This thesis investigates the representation of South American musical instruments in online museum collections. Currently, these collections primarily emphasize technical information following standards such as those of the MIMO project, making this data accessible predominantly to specialized audiences. However, information referring to the sociocultural and musical aspects of these instruments—such as their context of use, symbolic meaning, and performance techniques—is often lacking, thereby hindering a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic value of these extra-European instruments. To address this gap, this research proposes the design of an online exhibition dedicated to South American instruments, integrating these overlooked aspects with the aim of enriching the educational experience and encouraging a renewed appreciation of these instruments through a multi-layered interpretative approach. This initiative seeks to transcend the limits of traditional cataloguing practices by proposing an interdisciplinary approach which, through digital technologies, offers a holistic view of the instruments. In this way, the project aims to promote a deeper understanding and a renewed appreciation of South American collections in Italian musical instrument museums, fostering intercultural dialogue and integrating ethnomusicological perspectives within a virtual exhibition context.

Abstract
In this way, the project aims to promote a deeper understanding and a renewed appreciation of South American collections in Italian musical instrument museums, fostering intercultural dialogue and integrating ethnomusicological perspectives within a virtual exhibition context.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
