This study explores the rheological behavior of three non-Newtonian fluids in pipeline transport: heavy oil, water mixed with a polymeric chemical, and the organic fraction of the municipal solid waste. Firstly, the theoretical aspects of fluid mechanics were explored by defining the equations governing fluid motion. Secondly, particular attention was paid to the rheology of non-Newtonian fluids and the most used rheological models in research were described. Thirdly, the three non-Newtonian fluids fields of application were analysed along with the description of their physical and/or chemical characteristics. Finally, a pipeline transportation system was designed to analyse the fluid-dynamic properties of the three fluids when transported. This final step was achieved by the use of OLGA, a dynamic simulation software for single and multiphase flows, which provided the necessary data to be further processed. The study led to additional analysis on the variation in the rheological characteristics of transported fluids if some boundary conditions (e.g. temperature) were to be modified; moreover, it was made possible to outline the existing relationships between physical and rheological properties.

Abstract
The study led to additional analysis on the variation in the rheological characteristics of transported fluids if some boundary conditions (e.g. temperature) were to be modified; moreover, it was made possible to outline the existing relationships between physical and rheological properties.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
