Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs) in adolescence are associated with profound alterations in body representation and body perception, referred to in the literature as Body Image Disturbance (BID). These alterations do not exclusively concern a negative evaluation of physical appearance, but also involve perceptual, cognitive, affective, and multisensory processes that contribute to the maintenance of psychopathology. The present study aims to explore and describe, from an integrated perspective, the dimensions of body representation (body percept and body schema) and, in particular, the psychological correlates of BID in a sample of adolescents diagnosed with restrictive eating disorders (RED), descriptively and comparatively contrasted with a group of age-matched peers without psychopathological diagnoses. The objective is to delineate recurring clinical and perceptual profiles, without drawing causal inferences. The sample consists of participants aged between 13 and 18 years, divided into a clinical group and a control group. The assessment protocol includes cognitive and psychodiagnostic measures (EDI-3, BUT-A, MMPI-A) and body satisfaction measures. The analysis focuses in particular on the EDI-3 subscales (Maturity Fears, Low Self-Esteem, and Interoceptive Deficits), the BUT-A dimensions (Body Image Concern, Avoidance, and Depersonalization), and the MMPI-A clinical indices related to emotional and relational functioning. Data are analyzed using descriptive and group-comparison approaches in order to identify patterns of psychological and perceptual functioning associated with BID in the two samples. The results outline a profile in which BID is associated, rather than demonstrated as causal, with difficulties in interoceptive awareness, heightened concern about body image, and impairments in emotional and relational domains. The study highlights the complexity of the processes involved in body representation in adolescents with restrictive eating disorders and underscores the importance of considering, in an integrated manner, cognitive, emotional, perceptual, and relational dimensions, with particular attention to the family context, in order to better understand body misperception and to inform targeted clinical interventions.
