This study investigates the impact of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) assurance within the Chinese market. Utilizing data spanning from 2019 to 2023, the research specifically examines the energy and industrial sectors, evaluating their ESG disclosure practices and assurance mechanisms. Through a series of empirical analyses, the study demonstrates that ESG assurance exerts a significant positive influence on firms' overall ESG performance. Additional findings suggest that firms' ownership structures, prevailing government policies, and assurance quality serve as critical determinants of ESG performance and the effectiveness of the assurance process. Furthermore, it reveals that assurance generally plays a pivotal role in mediating financial performance through enhanced ESG outcomes; however, among the sample of assured State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), the financial performance is found to be less affected.
