Through the analysis of petitions from the Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt, I seek to explain the contexts in which violence was used against and by women. Even if the information presented in petitions should not be fully trusted because petitioners had many reasons to not be completely honest while submitting them, they are still a great source of insight into social interactions. Be it physical, sexual ou verbal, petitions complaining about violence had a specific language and structure. Beyond the violence that was socially accepted in the patriarcal society of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt against women, we find numerous cases of women being the perpetrators of violent encounters for varied reasons. Women showed themselves as capable of being violent towards other women but also towards men. These encounters happened within the family unit where a mother would attack her own son or an aunt, her niece, but it also occured between fellow villagers due to property violantion, finacial issues, among other causes.

Abstract
These encounters happened within the family unit where a mother would attack her own son or an aunt, her niece, but it also occured between fellow villagers due to property violantion, finacial issues, among other causes.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
