The aim of the thesis is to analyse different aspects of human beings-animals coexistence, in an attempt to maintain a constant connection between the past and the present. Starting from the characteristics of a complex cultural framework, made up of religious and philosophical elements that have always justified animal exploitation in order to satisfy human needs, the thesis underlines, through direct study of primary sources related to the case of the Lombardy region in the modern age, some controversial elements in this relationship. In particular, the thesis will focus on the sanitary question and the harmful consequences of interspecies coexistence, related to the communicability of diseases, also including a brief examination concerning the emergence of preventive controls against the spread of animal illnesses. Afterwards, in order to underline the long and apparently unshakable tradition that supports some violent and cruel practices against animals, the thesis explores the theme of meat consumption and butchery in its sociological and ecological implications, attempting to explain how modern age human beings were related to these practices and how their impact was perceived in regards to the healthiness of the city’s environment. Lastly, the thesis focuses on the theme of the complex relationship between animals and sciences, adopting various perspectives, trying to underline not only the positive aspects, like the development of veterinary, a medical field that aimed at curing them, but also the negative ones, especially referring to the long tradition of the animal experimentation, with a brief focus on the practice of vivisection.

Abstract
Lastly, the thesis focuses on the theme of the complex relationship between animals and sciences, adopting various perspectives, trying to underline not only the positive aspects, like the development of veterinary, a medical field that aimed at curing them, but also the negative ones, especially referring to the long tradition of the animal experimentation, with a brief focus on the practice of vivisection.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
