This thesis analyses the Italian banking market through the Structure–Conduct–Performance (SCP) paradigm, focusing on the relationships between market structure, banks’ strategic behaviour, and economic and financial performance. The aim of the study is to examine how different banking models, characterised by distinct ownership structures, organisational arrangements and objectives, influence banks’ conduct and performance, while operating within the same regulatory and macroeconomic framework. In particular, the analysis focuses on the model of Cooperative Credit Banks, with specific reference to the Iccrea Cooperative Banking Group following the 2016 reform, and provides a comparison with the systemically important banking model represented by the Intesa Sanpaolo Group. The study combines a theoretical framework with an empirical analysis, including a case study of the BCC Caravaggio Adda e Cremasco, which allows for an in-depth examination of the practical application of the cooperative banking model at the local level. The results show that the two banking models display different but complementary characteristics and performance. Cooperative banks are characterised by strong territorial roots, prudent risk management and greater long-term stability, while large banking groups benefit from economies of scale, greater diversification of activities and higher levels of profitability. Overall, the analysis confirms the importance of diversity in banking intermediation models as a key factor in ensuring balance and resilience within the Italian banking system, as well as in supporting the real economy.

Abstract
Overall, the analysis confirms the importance of diversity in banking intermediation models as a key factor in ensuring balance and resilience within the Italian banking system, as well as in supporting the real economy.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
