Schumpeter’s contribution on technological development

In the work that I am presenting as my thesis, I focused my attention on of the most important topics, if not the most, we can deal with in economics, technological development. Analysing this complex and wide topic, I took advantage of various thoughts that different economists proposed, one, above all, is Schumpeter. This Author has been, for me, fundumental since he was the person who deepened technological development, the most. Even Schumpeter relied on famous economists such as Marx and Ricardo, who were the first ones to consider the effects of this economic variable questioning pros and cons and reaching opposite conclusions. Besides Schumpeter’s deepening degree, in his analysis, his historicistic approach was determinant for my choice as I gree with this way of thinking. The historicistic approach is suitable for studying whatever deals with human sciences which study human behaviours and, for this reason, they can’t explain they thougths by means of models and formulas; this approach, instead, observing human history, tries highlight all the gears which rule over human economic behaviour. So that’s why Schumpeter completely relied on that approach and this aspect has fascinated me and was predominant for my choice as I have a similar standpoint; the author put his attention to, in his book capitalistic process, different economic cycles since history presents a repetition of cycles and each of them is created by technological progress. Due to this convergent point of view, I took this economist as my guide and I’ve undertaken this path basing my work on his studies; this character has been predominant as treating this topic, I needed the most relevant figure in this field and he, accorting to me, has that role because he was able to influence other economists who started to develop their thoughts from his ones.

Il contributo di Shumpeter allo sviluppo tecnologico Nell’elaborato che sottoporrò come tesi di laurea, mi sono concentrato su uno dei temi, se non il tema, focale dell’economia, ossia il progresso tecnologico. Per analizzare a fondo questa vasto e complesso tema, ho pensato di richiamare il pensiero di vari economisti che se ne sono occupati, uno su tutti Joseph Schumpeter. Questo autore si è rivelato fondamentale in quanto ad ispirazione ed utilità per questa tesi poiché egli è stato l’economista che più a fondo ha sviscerato questo argomento. Lo stesso Schumpeter si appoggiò ad illustri economisti come Marx e Ricardo, i quali furono i primi ad interrogarsi sugli effetti di questa variabile nel mondo economico, partendo da punti di vista opposti. Oltre al grado di approfondimento che caratterizzò, Schumpeter, nell’analisi del progresso tecnologico, determinante si è rivelato anche l’approccio che l’economista austriaco adottò nel trattare questa tematica, adottando un approccio storicistico. Questo tipo di approccio ha trovato la mia totale ammirazione poiché credo sia decisivo per studiare e capire i comportamenti dell’uomo; l’approccio storicistico, infatti, cerca di spiegare i fenomeni che riguardano la sfera umana attraverso un’attenta e meticolosa analizza della storia, provando a mettere in evidenza i vari meccanismi che regolano una determinata materia. L’approccio storicistico venne adottato in quanto Schumpeter considerava l’economia come una scienza umana e non come una disciplina scientifica che può rappresentare diversi fenomeni attraverso l’assunzione di modelli e formule matematiche; le scienze umane, invece, hanno la peculiarità di essere molto meno definibili, rispetto alle precedenti, e pertanto lo strumento migliore, al quale affidarsi, è la storia. L’autore perciò ripercorre diversi periodi storici nel suo libro il processo capitalistico, nel quale presente i diversi cicli economici, appunto cicli poiché l’economia, come la storia, presenta un andamento ciclico e lo sviluppo tecnologico funge da spartiacque tra un ciclo e quello successivo. Questo modo di affrontare questa tematica, mi ha trovato molto d’accordo e per questo motivo ho deciso di fare di questo economista il mio punto cardine, sviluppando appunto il mio elaborato sulla base delle sue riflessioni. La figura di questo personaggio, direi, che è stata dirompente per quanto concerne la trattazione dello sviluppo tecnologico, essendo questi stato in grado di influenzare diverse scuole di pensiero che presero spunto da Schumpeter e svilupparono poi un proprio pensiero.
