ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of Donald Trump’s tariff announcements and subsequent tariff implementations on the performance of the United States stock market, with particular emphasis on the S&P 500 Index as a measure of overall market activity. The research is motivated by the resurgence of protectionist trade policies during the Trump administration, which introduced significant uncertainty into global trade relations and financial markets. Drawing on the U.S.–China trade war and the broader framework of political and policy uncertainty, the study investigates how investors reacted to tariff-related news and whether these policy actions generated abnormal stock market returns and increased market volatility. The study employs an event study methodology combined with regression analysis to evaluate the short-term market effects of major tariff announcements and implementation dates. Using event windows surrounding key policy interventions, abnormal returns are estimated to determine whether stock prices reacted significantly to tariff-related information. The analysis is further supported by theoretical frameworks from asset pricing and political uncertainty literature, which suggest that stock prices respond to changes in expected future cash flows as well as shifts in investor risk perceptions. The findings indicate that tariff announcements generally exerted a negative effect on U.S. stock market performance. Major tariff announcements were associated with declines in stock prices, reflecting reduced expectations of future corporate profitability and heightened uncertainty regarding trade relations, supply chains, and global economic growth. The results further suggest that increased risk premiums and investor concerns about future economic conditions amplified the adverse market response. These findings are consistent with existing evidence showing that trade policy shocks can generate substantial losses in market valuation and contribute to increased financial market volatility. The study concludes that tariff policies function not only as trade instruments but also as important determinants of financial market behavior. By demonstrating the significant influence of tariff announcements on stock returns and investor sentiment, the research contributes to the growing literature on trade policy uncertainty and financial markets. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, investors, and market participants regarding the broader economic and financial implications of protectionist trade measures.
