Thisthesis analysesthe role of the organisational chart as a tool for organisational formalisation within a growing family-owned artisanal SME operating amid change management and generational transition. The research focuses on a company based in the Aosta Valley and active in the wood-processing sector that has, in recent years, undergone significant dimensional, productive, and organisational expansion. This development has made internal management more complex, highlighting the need to clarify roles, responsibilities, reporting lines, and coordination mechanisms. The study aims to assess the extent to which introducing a new organisational chart affects the organisational structure and the clarity of roles and responsibilities. To this end, an exploratory qualitative research design was adopted, based on a longitudinal case study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted at two points in time, before and after the introduction of the organisational chart, involving five key figures from different areas of the company. The results of the thematic analysis show that, prior to the introduction of the organisational chart, the organisation was characterised by a high degree of operational flexibility, strong reliance on informal practices, overlapping tasks, ambiguity in cross-functional responsibilities, and weaknesses in information flows. In the subsequent phase, the first signs emerged of greater clarity in the distribution of responsibilities, better identification of internal reference points, progressive specialisation of tasks, and a partial reduction in operational overlap. The organisational chart, therefore, emerges as a lever for organisational structuring and a tool to support change. Its contribution to internal coordination depends on the company’s ability to translate it into shared operational practices. Keywords: family-owned SME; organisational chart; change management; role clarity; organisational coordination.
